Assistant Chief of Police LaVita Chavous is currently assigned as the Commander of the Support Bureau.
On October 28, 1991, Chavous began her career in law enforcement with the former Louisville Division of Police (LPD).
As a patrol officer, she served in the former First, Second and Sixth Districts. As a detective, she served in the former Street Crimes Unit and the former Metro Narcotics Unit. After being promoted to sergeant in 1998, she served in the former Fifth District, the Homicide Unit, the Public Integrity Unit and the Eighth Division. In 2006, she was promoted to lieutenant and served in the Second Division and the Special Operations Division. Chavous served on the Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) for 10 years as a negotiator and team leader. She is a recipient of one (1) Meritorious Unit Citation.
She has also commanded the Sixth Division and Major Crimes Division.
Major Chavous is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) with a Bachelor of Science in Police Administration and a graduate of the University of Louisville (U of L) with a Master of Science in Justice Administration. She is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute (SPI) Administrative Officers Course, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy, KIIS Spanish Immersion Program and U of L's Advance Project Management Course. She is also a certified Kentucky Law Enforcement Council (KLEC) instructor.
Major Chavous is a second generation law enforcement officer. She has four (4) children.
