The Violent Crime Unit (VCU) performs the listed functions:
- Violent Crime Squads: Addresses violent crime in Louisville Metro by focusing on violent crime hot spots, identifying and arresting the worst criminal offenders, and addressing gang activity the unit encounters. The Violent Crime Squads are also crucial in identifying and apprehending fugitives who are known violent offenders.
- Place-Based Investigations (PBI) Squad: Addresses systemically violent locations and complements the department’s existing focused-deterrence strategy. The PBI Squad also focuses on identifying and disrupting crime place networks. These networks include crime sites, but also places used by offenders that do not typically come to the attention of the police. The PBI Squad will collaborate with other governmental and community partners to identify and eliminate violence facilitators.
